Western Red Cedar – beauty and longevity
We select only the best Western Red Cedar, supplied from renewable sources as it's the ideal material for use in our greenhouses. Noted for its extraordinary durability, it doesn’t shrink, swell or warp excessively, and readily holds wood stains and micro-porous paints. It has prime insulating qualities and its pleasant aroma is naturally repellent to moths, insects and vermin.
All of our unpainted greenhouses are factory-treated by total immersion in our Golden Honey cedar preservative prior to delivery which renders it virtually immune to decay, while our painted greenhouse options look stylish in any outdoor setting and are protected with micro porous paint.
If you wish to maintain the original warm, golden honey colour, we recommend you re-treat your frame annually. If not, the wood will gradually fade to its attractive natural appearance - varying from almost pure white of the narrow sapwood to the light straw shade of the heartwood. This will not affect your 10 year framework guarantee.
Safe as glass houses
All our greenhouses come with toughened safety glass as standard, conforming to BS 6206 – Class A. In the event of a breakage, it will shatter into small fragments rather than jagged shards, reducing the chance and severity of cuts or other injuries – giving peace of mind around elderly relatives, small children or pets. Full-length glazing means no overlaps and no algae build-up. The panes are held in place by Cedar glazing beads, so there’s no need for putty and it’s easy to replace any panes that do get broken.
Exclusive Concrete Base Kerbs
Alton Amateur and Traditional greenhouses feature exclusive concrete base kerbs that help anchor Alton greenhouses to the ground - ideal in stormy weather. These solid and durable kerbs also prevent the cedar wood from coming into the damp ground thus helping to extend the life of Alton greenhouses still further. Smaller concrete base kerbs feature on the octagonal range of greenhouses.
In independent tests carried out over 12 months, a like-for-like comparison between an Alton cedar framed greenhouse and an equivalent size aluminium model demonstrated that the Alton provided a superior growing environment, with:
• Better thermal efficiency – using up to 20% less electricity, saving you money over the long term
• Less temperature fluctuation
• Less frequent watering needed
• Healthier plants – less prone to leaf curl and mould
• Over 10% higher yields
